just about any 6000K GX10Q-4 base bulb will doNov 08, 2007
By fatmav I have one from an original Verilux's fixture and the included bulb burned out in less than 2 months. Then I replaced it with another brand's bulb.
In terms of form factor, as long as it has a GX10Q-4 base (sometimes called "linear quad" or "4 pin F quads"), any replacement bulb should fit *EDIT* but please see the discussion in the product "comments" below for a brand that works and another that doesn't. I do not know why there can be so much variation in a socket specification...
In terms of light quality, as long as it's 6000K, you may not see a difference unless you do a side-by-side experiment. Sure, Verilux will claim that they are "full-spectrum", but you can read the spectroradiometer output yourself if you search for "solux verilux". I won't go so far to claim that all 6000K Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs on the market are the same. They may vary in the chemical composition and hence the color temperature. (Verilux measures 5700K in my experiment and a competitor's at 5900K. Note that most people prefer warmer temperature so indeed 5700K is more preferrable.)
Having used a different brand's replacement myself, there is very little difference in Verilux's bulb to justify the much higher price (more than double if you shop around) when compared to competitors. Your choice.

DON'T BE FOOLED !Nov 29, 2007
By J J The picture shows a genuine Verilux bulb! They send you a cheap Chinese knockoff. They even use the genuine Verilux stock number. This was made to fool you.

Wasted MoneyMar 29, 2006

"Learning to Shop"
The "first" bulb I received from the Website lasted approximatey 45 minutes before burning out. I have not been able to determine if the bulb was incorrect for my lamp or not. When I called the 800 number and explained this, the person at the other end was apologetic and offered to send me a replacement. When the replacement arrived, it was cracked and broken in several places. I gave up and vowed never to order anything so fragile through the mail again.

Great Light, and it Fits Properly (Unlike its cheaper rivals)Jan 17, 2010
By Eric C. Anderson If you own a lamp spceifically built for this bulb, don't buy the cheaper alternatives. If you look closely at the photos of these cheaper alternatives, you will note that the base is not the same shape! I wound not have noticed this except for some person who wrote a review that stated that it did not fit. Clearly, you might get it to work, but you also might not, and it may fall out more easily.
I have used this product for a number of years as a reading lamp. Its 'daylignt' color balance is really excellent for reading - the higher frequencies of light (mroe blue than orange) make reading easy, especially with a Kindle, and especially if your eyesight is less than perfect. The bulbs seem to last forever ... so why did I need to buy another...? The asnwer to that one is the location of my lamp, my lazy-boy, and my home entertainment system left speaker... :(. I have knocked over the lamp at least 10 times by leaning back (also the speaker - 4 dents in the wall). The most recent time, the bulb was broken, so I bought a new one. Actually amazing it lasted that many falls to the floor!
If you want a really great reading lamp, this is the one. If you have it near a lazy-boy, consider screwing the lamp base to the floor... :). I have seen "sunlight" light-balanced lamps (my wife has one), which are great health-wise during the winter for other reasons besides the best reading light, but for me, daylignt balance is the best!

Poor and Insulting ServiceNov 11, 2007
By Dr. G. Scott First experience with this vendor. Item arrived not functioning. In order to replace the item, the vendor wanted me to take a picture of the item and return it to them "proving" that the item was not functioning. The vendor assumed that I have a digital camera and would tolerate the hassle of their request. Enough! I patronize Amazon and their vendors for convenience and quality - when the "(hassle) to (convenience and quality)" ratio gets too high - I balk. That's what happened in this case. I will still patronize Amazon but no way for this vendor - there are many other sources for the vendor's merchandise - they should understand that they are in the commodity business!
