beautiful light, very long lifeApr 23, 2012
By E. Persson These SoLux lamps have among the best Color Rendering Index (CRI) of any lamp you can buy. This means that they almost perfectly match the radiant color characteristics of the sun. If you have ever gotten dressed in a room lit with bad CFL lighting, then gone outside and noticed that the suit and pants that appeared to match inside, are actually different colors and now you can see that in the sunlight - you can appreciate good lighting and high CRI... Wood floors and furniture look particularly rich when lit with these lamps. I prefer the warmer 3,500k color temperature, and they are slightly more efficient that the higher color temperature versions. I use the 50W MR-16 lamps with the widest beamwidth for wall-wash and downlighting. I have them on Lutron dimmers that turn them on and off slowly - and they last far longer than any other halogen incandescent lamps I have. Out of about 48 lamps installed in 2005 (that are used every day), it was more than 3 years before I had to replace a single lamp. The ballast transformer failed before the lamp on some of them. VERY high reliability and quality.
CONS: OK - they are really expensive, but to me, the CRI is worth it. Efficiency: Halogen lamps like this are much better than standard incandescent lights, but these still use a lot more energy than CFL or LED lights for the same light output. In other words, these generate a lot of heat and use a lot of electricity for the amount of light they provide. One other thing, these lamps did cause some significant fading on a cherry wood floor where a rug was covering part of the floor. There was a major line of light-dark where the rug had been, and this is in a basement room that gets no natural sunlight. So maybe their light output is TOO much like the sun...

I've had these for many years in a kitchen/dining room pair of well-used tracklight systems. The light is startlingly bright at first but very, very nice and warm, like daylight. They're well-suited to rheostats so no problem dimming to taste.
The shipping took awhile to arrive but it was in good condition, so not a big problem and no reason to lose a star.
