5Quintessential lightingAug 16, 2011
By Constant Shadow
I saw bulbs like this at a local restaurant and was so charmed by their quintessential "cartoon light bulb over the head" look, I just had to have some of my own! For me, keeping them turned down to about a candle's brightness is just right- I'm not after illumination, I want the filament to be an art-element in it's own right, so I keep them on a dimmer and turned down.

These are not rough-duty bulbs at all. The rating of 3000 hrs is an average, meaning some burn longer and some burn for fewer hours. Some tips for extending the life:
-Keep them turned down to about half power. This alone should extend the life by about 3x.
-Never, ever jar the bulb when it is on. The filaments in these bulbs are more delicate than regular bulbs and have more filament suspended from the harp. A hard knock will break a hot filament and prolonged exposure to vibration will eventually weaken the filament where it is held by the harp.
-The squirrel cage and hair-pin filament styles should only be used vertically.

You can also get carbon filament lamps which have an even warmer (oranger) appearance.

Here is a picture of a lamp I made using one of the quad-coil bulbs:- [...]

5Awesome ambianceNov 15, 2011

This bulb is dim enough that you can use it without a shade and bask in the awesomeness of its four loop filament. Also it casts a warm glow reminiscent of candle light which really classes up the joint

5Great light bulbsOct 28, 2011

Very well lit room now. Nice yellow tint. Very old fashion appearance. Use with a dimmer so you can see the coils better.

4soft light, vintage lookJun 30, 2011

We're using this bulb for our outdoor porch lamp since we didn't want a bright light shining into our home, or into our neighbor's. We wanted a vintage look, and this bulb achieves that. It gives off a nice yellow-ish light.

3Bulb dimensions not as advertisedMay 18, 2012

The brightness of the bulb's 40 watt rating is about right. I compared it with another Edison style bulb I purchase from Home Depot and a standard 40 watt bulb I already had. I didn't measure the exact lumens, but comparing them side by side, the brightness appears consistent across all the bulbs.

I agree with other users about using this bulb with a dimmer if you are concerned about not being able to see the filaments (which is really why you are paying so much for a single bulb). At full brightness, you will not be able to see the filaments distinctly when looking at the bulb directly, but if you use the bulb in a tinted glass pendant as I am, the tint helps dim the bulb enough to make out the filaments even at full brightness. Dimming the bulb is probably a much more elegant solution.

My issue with this bulb concerns its size. The listed "Assembled Height" of this bulb is 5.75". The bulb comes nowhere near this. I measured it to be only 4.5 inches. This makes a difference to me when the bulb is meant to be used without a lamp shade, in a open direct view application. I expected the bulb to be bigger, with bigger filaments so you can see if from a further distance. The width of the bulb is also slightly off from the listed specification. The listed width is 2.25", I measured it to be about 1-2 cm more. Hope this helps.
