5Day lightJan 14, 2009
By E. V. SANCHEZ "Painter"
I am a portait painter and was looking for a light source that would deliver; bright day light, day light spectrum and save money on electricity bills.
The 85 watt compact light bulb, delivers 400 watt, and surpases all of my expectations.
I don't know why they call it; "compact fluorecent light bulb", for it is about 12 inches long.

3Energy saver, less heat, but, not too brightMar 17, 2010
By J. Martas "Ted Magic"
I bought two of these bulbs as an alternative for the 500 Watt incandescent lamps in my 20 inch light boxes. Well, maybe I didn't do the math correctly, but, here are my thoughts.

Two 500 Watt incandescent lamps (1000 watt total), six feet from the subject, were too bright, used a lot of electricity, and give off a lot of heat. The details for these bulbs state, "...equivalent of 340 Watt incandescent lamp..." So I figured, two of these would, equal 680 watts, used less electricity and, give off less heat. This is were my math must be wrong. At the same six feet from the subject, there was NOT enough light. I had to move the lights to less than three feet from the subject to get enough light. Which also means, you NARROW DOWN the amount of light. In other words, instead of lighting a subject head-to-toe, you only have light to do a passport photo.

The color temperature is very nice. The physical size of the bulbs is larger than I thought, but, they fits fine in the 20 inch light boxes. These bulbs DO use a lot less electricity, DO give off a lot less heat and the life of these bulbs (est. 8000 hours, as listed) makes them great for everyday use. ...FOR CLOSE-UPS, if you only have two light boxes with one socket each. They just aren't as bright as I figured.

By the way, the 500 Watt incandescent lamps only offer about sixty hours of service. If you factor that in, you can give it another star.

3Not good for video useJan 16, 2011
By credish
Unfortunately, these bulbs buzz a little. Not a lot, but enough that a good mic would hear them. You could probably filter it out in post, but I'd rather not have to deal with a buzz, so I'll have to return them.
For any use other than video, they probably be great. They seem bright, and they are daylight balanced. As others have said, they are huge - about 11 inches long, and 3 inches diameter.
